The expedition begins after breakfast. Riding southwest out of Delhi, the city gradually dissolves into the pastoral heartland of Haryana-mustard fields, camel carts, and roadside chai stalls. The roads are straight and forgiving, perfect for settling into your Royal Enfield's rhythm. By afternoon, you cross into the Shekhawati region, where the landscape is dotted with ornate merchant mansions painted floor to ceiling with mythological murals, hunting scenes, and colonial vignettes. An evening heritage walk through Mandawa's havelis is a step into a living, breathing art gallery.

Today the terrain shifts. The green countryside gives way to semi-arid scrubland as you ride deeper into Rajasthan. Villages become smaller, traffic thinner, and the sky larger. It is the kind of riding that clears the mind. Arrive at Khimsar by afternoon, and as the sun begins its descent, ride out to the nearby sand dunes. The Thar at sunset-all burning amber and silence-is something that stays with you long after the journey ends.

A short but richly rewarding ride through the desert to Osian, a 9th-century temple town that once thrived on ancient Silk Route trade. Its intricately carved sandstone shrines rise improbably from golden dunes-worth every minute of the stop. From here, the road leads to Jodhpur, where the blue-washed old city spreads beneath the colossal walls of Mehrangarh Fort. Perched 400 feet above the city, the fort's palaces, courtyards, and commanding views make it one of India's most impressive sights.

This is the ride riders remember. Long, straight desert highways stretch ahead with barely a car in sight. The Thar opens up in every direction-vast, golden, and humbling. A tea stop in Pokaran breaks the journey before the final push to Jaisalmer, where the golden sandstone fort glows in the late afternoon light as if lit from within. The old city's narrow lanes, carved havelis, and rooftop cafes make for a magical evening.

Leaving behind the golden fort, today's ride takes you through some of the most remote and authentic corners of the Thar. Small mud-brick villages, women in vivid mirror-work attire, and the occasional herd of camels are your companions on the road. Barmer is a raw, unhurried desert town known for its exceptional block-printed textiles and woodcraft-an offbeat gem that most travellers miss entirely.

A long but rewarding ride through rural Rajasthan as the flat desert gradually gives way to dramatic granite outcrops. Jawai is one of India's best-kept wildlife secrets-a landscape of sculpted rock hills, pastoral villages, and wandering leopards that have lived in extraordinary coexistence with the local Rabari community for generations. An afternoon leopard safari in this surreal setting is unlike any wildlife experience you will find elsewhere.

Today's ride through the Aravalli Hills is pure joy-curving mountain roads, forested valleys, and cool breezes replace the desert heat. Udaipur, when it appears, feels like a mirage: a city of marble palaces, shimmering lakes, and blooming gardens. The afternoon is spent exploring the magnificent City Palace and taking a boat ride on Lake Pichola, with the Lake Palace floating at its centre like a white marble dream.

A longer ride through the rural heartland of Rajasthan-but the destination is worth every kilometre. Bundi is one of those rare towns that time seems to have bypassed: a tangle of blue-painted lanes, a hilltop fort covered in remarkable murals, and ancient stepwells so ornate they feel more like sculptures than functional structures. It is deeply atmospheric, largely crowd-free, and utterly captivating.

A short, easy ride to Ranthambore-home to one of India's most celebrated tiger reserves. Check in and head straight into the forest on a shared safari jeep, navigating dry deciduous woodland and open grasslands in search of the Bengal tiger. Ranthambore's tigers are famously bold, often spotted in open terrain near ancient ruins-making for dramatic and unforgettable wildlife encounters.

Rise before dawn for an early morning safari as the forest comes alive in soft golden light-often the best time for a tiger sighting. After breakfast, saddle up for the ride to Jaipur, Rajasthan's vibrant Pink City. The ride is smooth and the afternoon gives you time to soak in the city's energy before a full day of sightseeing tomorrow.

A full day to explore the architectural treasures of the Pink City. Begin at Amber Fort-a stunning hilltop palace complex overlooking Maota Lake, where ornate gateways, mirrored halls, and royal apartments tell centuries of Rajput history. En route back, stop at Jal Mahal, the Water Palace rising serenely from the middle of Man Sagar Lake. In the city, visit the City Palace-still home to the royal family, its museums housing royal costumes, weapons, and miniature paintings-followed by Jantar Mantar, the UNESCO-listed astronomical observatory with the world's largest stone sundial. The day ends with a photo stop at Hawa Mahal, the iconic Palace of Winds with its 953 latticed windows, glowing pink in the evening light.

The evening is free-wander the lanes near the Taj Mahal, browse the marble inlay workshops, or simply rest after fourteen remarkable days on the road.

Wake before dawn for a sunrise visit to the Taj Mahal-the monument in the first light of morning, wrapped in mist and silence, is something no photograph quite captures. After this final, fitting farewell to the journey, ride the Yamuna Expressway back to Delhi. Motorcycles are returned; memories are kept.
